Ugly Sweater Party With Kids: Outfits and the Drive Home

Short answer: pick a sweatshirt-weight ugly sweater for each child, not a chunky knit with things glued on, and switch them into pajamas before you leave. The American Academy of Pediatrics says bulky clothing should not be worn underneath the harness of a car seat, so the party outfit has to pass the pinch test or come off. Coats go over the straps. And if your baby falls asleep on the way home, they come out of the car seat and onto a flat, bare crib or bassinet when you get in. A car seat isn’t a safe place to sleep once you’ve arrived.

Most holiday parties are an outfit problem. This one is an outfit problem and a bedtime problem: it’s at a friend’s house, it starts around dinner, and it ends with a sleeping kid in the back seat. The good news is that the right sweater makes the drive home easier too.

The kids’ sweater: choose sweatshirt weight

Ugly sweaters for kids come in two very different builds. One is a printed or lightly knitted crewneck that’s basically a sweatshirt. The other is a thick, chunky knit with pom-poms, jingle bells, felt antlers or a light-up battery pack sewn on.

For a party you’ll drive home from, choose the first.

The AAP’s winter car-seat advice is to dress kids in thin layers and says a sweater or thermal-knit shirt is fine as the warmer top. Its warning is about bulk: even if your child looks snugly bundled, multiple layers can make it hard to tighten the harness enough. A thick knit with a 3D reindeer on the front is exactly that kind of bulk. A battery pack is worse, because it’s a hard lump sitting between your child and the straps.

A crewneck sweatshirt like this Akyzic reindeer Christmas sweatshirt gives you the whole joke in a sweatshirt shape, and it can usually stay on for the drive if it passes the pinch test.

Fit Notes: buy their current size, not a size up “to grow into”. A baggy sweater bunches under the chest clip. And whatever they wear, do the AAP’s pinch test once they’re buckled. If you can pinch the strap at the chest, tighten it, or take the sweater off.

Skip on toddlers: glued-on pom-poms and bells. They’re small parts within easy reach of a two-year-old who’s bored at a grown-up party.

Your sweater: one loud thing, everything else quiet

The holiday party outfit formula for an ugly sweater party still applies: the sweater + plain dark jeans + boots. The sweater is the costume, so everything else should be the most boring thing you own.

Two mom-specific tweaks:

  • Choose a knit you can lift a sleeping child in. You’ll be bending into a back seat at 8 p.m. A knit pullover that fits at the shoulder moves with you; a boxy oversized one rides up. A crewneck knit like this Pink Queen Christmas cat sweater is the shape to look for, in your usual size.
  • Wear flat boots. You may be carrying a car seat across an icy driveway or a toddler up the stairs. Leave heels for parties you’ll leave alone.

The plan for the evening

Arrive early. An ugly sweater party with kids works best if you show up at the start, when the snacks are out and your kids are fresh. The family part of the party is the first two hours anyway.

Pick your leaving time before you go. Work back from bedtime: allow for the drive, the pajama switch and the goodbyes, which always take fifteen minutes longer than you think. It’s the same timing math as any evening out, just with the kids in the car.

End with something calm. Before you start rounding up shoes, give the kids a quieter game to wind down. Betteroo’s Christmas games list suggests finishing the night with a calm game before bed, after the more active ones. A round of something seated beats a last lap of the living room.

The pajama switch before you leave

This is the move that saves the night. About twenty minutes before you go, take the kids somewhere quiet, swap the sweater for pajamas and brush their teeth if you can. Then bundle them out.

Pack a soft, snug cotton set in the diaper bag, like these Burt’s Bees Baby organic cotton pajamas. Pajamas are thin enough for the car seat, so all they need on top is a coat over the straps. If you’re doing matching family Christmas pajamas this year, the party is a good place to debut the kids’ set.

Then dress for the car the same way you would on any dark winter drive. The winter coat in a car seat guide covers the details: thin layers under the harness, the coat on backwards or a blanket over the buckled straps, and nothing bulky underneath your child.

If the baby falls asleep at the party

It happens. Your baby will be passed around, warm and full, and then out cold at 7 p.m. in somebody’s lap.

Don’t leave them to sleep in the car seat on the floor. The AAP says babies can sleep in a properly installed car seat in the car, but car seats should not be considered a safe place to sleep outside of the car. The same page suggests bringing a bassinet or portable play yard if you aren’t sure there will be a safe sleep space where you’re going.

For a party where a nap is likely, bring a play yard like the Graco On the Go Pack ‘n Play and set it up in a quiet room. Lay your baby on their back on the bare mattress, with nothing else inside. A friend’s sofa or guest bed isn’t a safe place for a baby to sleep either.

The car-seat sleep home, and the hand-off

The drive home will probably finish them off. That’s fine while you’re driving.

When you pull in:

  1. Lift off the coat or blanket first, then unbuckle.
  2. Babies go straight onto a flat, bare sleep surface. Don’t carry the car seat inside and leave them in it to finish the nap. The AAP is clear that a car seat isn’t a safe place to sleep once you’ve arrived.
  3. Toddlers go straight to bed. They’re already in pajamas, so there’s nothing to change. Skip the bath. One night without it won’t hurt.
  4. Keep the lights low and the talking minimal. If they wake up, keep it boring and quick.

If the house is cold, check what they’re sleeping in. Car layers and bed layers aren’t the same thing, and the cold-night layering guide covers what a baby should wear to bed.

FAQ

Can my child wear an ugly Christmas sweater in a car seat?

A thin, sweatshirt-weight one, yes. The AAP lists a sweater as a fine top layer but says nothing bulky should go under the harness. Skip chunky knits, 3D add-ons and battery packs. Buckle up, and if you can pinch the strap at the chest, tighten it or take the sweater off.

Should I change my kids into pajamas before leaving a party?

Yes, if you’re leaving close to bedtime. Pajamas are thin enough for the car seat, and if your child falls asleep on the drive, you can carry them straight to bed with nothing left to change.

Can my baby nap in the car seat at the party?

No. The AAP says a car seat isn’t a safe place to sleep outside the car. Bring a portable play yard or bassinet, and lay your baby on their back on the bare, flat surface.

My baby fell asleep in the car. Can I leave them in the car seat when we get home?

No. Move them to a flat, bare crib or bassinet. Car seats are designed to keep babies safe while the car is moving, not as a place to finish the nap indoors.

What should I wear to an ugly sweater party with kids?

The sweater, plain dark jeans and flat boots. Choose a sweater that fits at the shoulder so you can bend and lift, and skip heels if you’ll be carrying a child or a car seat to the car.
